Director of Planning and Sustainability

The Town of Cumberland is seeking a full-time Director of Planning and Sustainability.

This position performs a variety of complex, administrative, technical, and professional work in directing the Town’s economic and community development, and planning functions.  Work involves strategic visioning, supervision of staff, budget preparation, and evaluation of department programs.  Works with department leadership to support community stakeholders, including the Town Manager, Town staff, and board and committee members, in providing professional guidance relative to the Town’s planning, zoning, and development efforts. The Director is required to attend and staff night meetings of the Planning Board, Comprehensive Planning Committee, and Town Council meetings as requested.

This is a professional and technical position responsible for supporting municipal planning functions in the Town. This position involves participation in initiatives that require the ability to conduct research, draft summary findings, and present proposals to Department leadership for the advancement of planning related initiatives. The person in this position has independence in planning daily work and exhibits good judgment and decision-making skills.

Position Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in planning, public administration, or related field is required;
  • Master’s Degree in Planning or related field is desirable;
  • Three to five (3-5) years of progressively responsible experience in a complex municipal environment;
  • Computer literacy and experience with Microsoft Office products and GIS; or
  • Any equivalent combination of knowledge, skills, abilities, and work experience may be considered.
