Dear Cumberland Citizens,
Welcome to the
new edition of the Cumberland Crier. We have been having issues with
the email program. The program is not intended to have as much
information in it as we have been trying to do. As a result, I
will be trying to put the most important Town news as a priority,
followed by agendas and as much local information as can fit.
If you do not see your information in this letter, I will try
to get it in the next edition. I will do my best to accommodate
everyone. If you have any community event that you would like to
submit for this newsletter, please email todonnell@cumberlandmaine.com
Have a
wonderful weekend, and thank you for subscribing.

SCHOOL IS OPEN!
The Cumberland Police Department welcomes back all
students and faculty to the Greely Campus. Please take a moment
when you are traveling to and from the campus to monitor your
speed. The Cumberland Police Department will have extra patrols
in and around the campus area for the first few days to make sure
that everyone gets to and from our schools safely. Please take
extra time when coming to the area and pay particular attention to
our buses as this is the safest mode of transportation students can

KEEP THE SPIRIT OF '45 ALIVE!
KEEP THE SPIRIT OF '45 ALIVE! is a non-profit,
non-partisan initiative to preserve the legacy of the men and women
of the Greatest Generation, the American men and women who endured
the hard times of the Great Depression, fought to defeat the greatest
tyranny in history, and then went on to rebuild their shattered world
in an unprecedented effort to help assure a better future for both
friend and former foe alike. One goal of KEEP THE SPIRIT OF '45
ALIVE! is to establish an annual day of
remembrance and national renewal. Parts of the group's efforts
involve uploading scanned images of World War II veterans to a Wall
of Honor. Prince Memorial Library is asking community members
with images of veterans to bring them to the library for scanning so
they can be uploaded to the Wall of Honor.
In its continuing effort to preserve the rich heritage
of Cumberland and North Yarmouth, Prince Memorial Library is calling
on veterans and their families to bring in images of veterans,
regardless of when they served.
All photographs of veterans brought to the library for
scanning will be returned to their owners. Please try to
include as much information as is available for the veteran in the
photograph.

PUBLIC SERVICES NOTICE
Fall of 2011 Bulky Item
Pickup Week is scheduled for the week of October 17th through the
21st.
A Bulky Item Pickup Week
was designed to assist the Residents of Cumberland in the disposal of
large, oversized items that cannot fit into the Town's PAYT bags in
the weekly trash or be recycled in regular curbside
recycling.
Examples of items that
could be included in the Bulky Waste Pickup are chairs, couches, mattresses,
large metal items such as electric water heaters and bicycles.
This program is not
designed to be a free trash disposal week. Smaller items that could
fit into a PAYT bag should be disposed of with your weekly
trash. Generic bags and boxes of household materials will no
longer be accepted.
Phones, computers, TV's
and appliances containing Freon should be disposed of at Riverside
Recycling for a small fee or donated to a charitable organization
like Goodwill.
2 Tires per household will
be accepted if the rim has been removed.
Paint Cans that are OPEN
and DRY will be picked up during Bulky Waste Week only, at no other
time during the year.
For a more extensive
list of items that will and will not be picked up this time, please
see the Town's Web Site at www.cumberlandmaine.com or
Call Cumberland Public Services at 829-2220

SIGN UP FOR FREE DISPOSAL OF OLD PESTICIDES BY
SEPTEMBER 30, 2011
The Maine Board of Pesticides Control (BPC) is
organizing free safe disposal of old pesticides at four collection
sites. The collected chemicals will go to out-of-state disposal
facilities licensed by the US EPA where they are incinerated or
reprocessed. "Disposal of obsolete pesticides is expensive for
the state," notes Paul Schlein of the
BPC, "but it's clearly much less than the cost of cleaning up
contaminated soil or water. However, it's worth noting that future
funding is not guaranteed, so be sure to take advantage of this
year's collection while you can." Preregistration is
required by September 30. To register, get details, and learn
important information about the temporary storage and transportation
of obsolete pesticides, go to the BPC Web site at www.thinkfirstspraylast.org,
or call the BPC at 287-2731.
